Recent belande ik op een verveelde zondagmiddag weer eens op sargasso. Sargasso, dat is dat linksige weblog waar men het nieuws van de dag herkauwt en van een al dan niet op feiten gebaseerde mening voorziet.

Daardoor vroeg ik me ineens af hoe het nu staat met dat hele fenomeen bloggen. Jaren geleden ben ik daar zelf eens mee begonnen, maar de laatste tijd zat de klad er wat in. Ik vrees dat mijn naieve illusie van een groep wel-geinformeerde burgers die in het belang van de wereld in het algemeen het nieuws dat in de oude media geen aandacht krijgt op objectieve wijze voor het voetlicht brengen.

Maar, waar denken die bloggers in vredesnaam dat ze mee bezig zijn? Laat ik de onderbouwing beginnen met een stuk tekst van sargasso:

“Onze intentie is niet allen maar een ‘copy-paste linkdump weblog’te zijn. In plaats daarvan willen we aandacht geven aan nieuws dat terzijde is geschoven door de traditionele media, informatieve stukken schrijven over wetenschap, politiek of cultuur alsmede wat te doen aan vroeg-Ming dynastie fetishisme.”

Een fraaie tekst vol van belofte. Eens zien hoe de diverse groepen bloggers van tegenwoordig zich verhouden tot dit stuk proza.

Om te beginnen zijn er de bloggers die er een opinie op na houden. Bloggers die een boodschap hebben. Dit resulteert in blogs waar het nieuws van de dag door semi-intelectuele column-schrijvers van een mening wordt voorzien. Ook ik heb dit recent mogen meemaken met betrekking tot een evenement waar ik 1 van de hoofd-organisatoren ben.
Maar eigenlijk gaat het deze bloggers niet om die boodschap. Vaak wordt deze niet of slecht onderbouwd met verifieerbare feiten. Door maar in te springen op actueel nieuws, en daar een felle en vaak negatieve houding over aan te nemen, hopen deze bloggers veel lezers naar zich toe te trekken. Conflict boeit immers mateloos. Lekker macho om je heen meppen, dat doet het ego van dit type blogger goed.

Dan heb je de bloggers met een agenda: politieke partijen en bedrijven. Dat zijn bloggers die hun best doen om de argeloze lezer over te halen zich een bepaald politiek denkbeeld aan te meten of een bepaald product of merk te internaliseren. Dit doen ze veelal uit winstbejag, of het nu om stemmen of keiharde euro’s gaat. Heel begrijpelijk, maar weinig nobel. De wereld schiet er weinig mee op. Sterker nog, als de een hier winst mee behaald, zal de ander hard aan het werk gaan om hier bovenuit te schreeuwen om de zieltjes weer terug te winnen. En zo verwordt het internet tot een marktplaats, waar de kakafonie van schreeuwende bedrijven en politici de aandacht afleidt van werkelijke informatie. Lekker asociaal.

Vervolgens zijn er de lifeblogs. Op deze blogs schrijven mensen in het openbaar stukjes die eigenlijk alleen voor vrienden en familie zijn bedoeld. Dat behalve de (groot-)ouders niemand het kind schattig vindt, of dat het laatste abces dat operatief moest worden verwijderd bij de kat (of soms ook de schrijver zelf) niet per se met fotomateriaal geillustreerd aan de wereld hoeft te worden getoond, gaat aan deze mensen voorbij.
Deze groep bloggers zitten misschien een beetje in lijn met de uitspraak van sargasso. Ze brengen in ieder geval nieuws dat door de traditionele media terzijde is geschoven. Maar om nou te zeggen dat ze daarmee informatieve stukken schrijven waar de wereld wat aan heeft…

De academische bloggers kan je nauwelijks bloggers noemen. Als je als afstudeeropdracht hebt om een maand lang iedere dag te bloggen over een artikel dat tot je verbeelding spreekt, is dat gewoon educatie. Wel heel goed dat het gebeurt, maar ze vallen toch eigenlijk niet binnen de gemeenschap.

Een bijzondere groep is de literaire blogger (mijn naam). Dat zijn bloggers die op hun blog de fantasie de vrije loop laten. To boldly go where no blogger has gone before. Gewoon omdat het kan. Op zoek gaan naar interresante proza of dichtversen bijvoorbeeld, uit de diepste krochten van de menselijke geest.

Fascinerend werk, maar de wereld heeft er meestal weinig aan. Sterker nog, volgens mij komt het grootste deel van deze stukken nooit in de openbaarheid. Daar zijn ze te intiem voor. Bovendien hebben ze dan alweer een nieuwe uitdaging gevonden.

Dan zijn er de shockblogs. Dat zijn bloggers die het leuk vinden om te beledigen. Stoer, geeft een gevoel van macht. Meestal is iemand volledig afkraken en volschelden genoeg. Soms zijn er wat complexere aanvallen voor nodig. Meestal laat het veel psychische schade achter en een hoop frustratie. Waarom ze het doen? Ze zeggen dat het is omdat de man van de straat het wil weten. Maar dan hadden ze ook net niet over de grens van het betamelijke kunnen gaan om hun punt te maken. Ook weer gewoon ego waarschijnlijk. De wereld wordt er in ieder geval niet beter door.

Een problematische groep binnen de bloggerswereld is die van de criminelen. Die gebruiken alle middelen die maar ter beschikking staan op bloggebied voor het “verdienen” van geld. Spam achterlaten in comments, blogs opzetten die automatisch artikelen schrijven met trackbacks naar legitieme blogs om slachtoffers naar hun twijfelachtige sites te lokken. Lijkt me duidelijk dat deze groep niet helemaal aan de definitie voldoet en dat dit fenomeen alleen maar meer problemen gaat veroorzaken.

Dan heb je nog de speciale kudde van nationalistische bloggers. Propagandistsiche teksten, opruiende pamfletten. Allemaal bedoelt om de natie verder op te stuwen in de vaart der volkeren. Wederom weinig nobele groepen bloggers waar de wereld als geheel niet gelukkiger van wordt.

Na het noemen van al deze groepen is het misschien aardig als u ook nog even kennis neemt van de lijst met 10 meest bekende Nederlandse blogs volgens Wikipedia.

Jammer toch? Zat er iets in de lijst waardoor de wereld vrijer, beter of gelukkiger werd? Geeft een van bovenstaande groepen bloggers u het gevoel nieuws te lezen dat u nog niet van de traditionele media had vernomen?
Ik geloof er niet meer in. Volgens mij zijn en blijven het mislukte journalisten die domweg gelukkig worden van geneuzel in de marge als het maar ingewikkeld genoeg is om stoer te doen tegen een andere mislukte journalist, een uitzondering daargelaten.

Nee, ik krijg pas weer geloof in de bloggersgemeenschap als die ineens massaal een tegenaanval opzetten tegen al die mainstream media. Of wanneer ze als Europese bloggers zonder te knipperen met hun ogen naar bezette voormalige Russische staten afreizen om ter plekke objectief verslag te doen. Of wanneer ze twee weken voor iets als een Irak-oorlog geheime mailwisselingen tussen Blair, Cheney en Aznar hadden geopenbaard. Of wanneer ze stukken schrijven waar alle Nederlanders het de volgende dag over hebben. Of als ze achteloos de vreemde gewoontes van de Tweede Kamerleden in de publiciteit gooien.
Dan brengen ze tenminste iets informatiefs. Dan laten ze tenminste zien dat ze echt iets kunnen. Dan maken maken ze de ernstige en gevaarlijke zaken zichtbaar. Dan doen ze iets dat ook buiten de gemeenschap respect afdwingt.
Voorlopig ben ik bang dat de happy sargasso bloggers dit jaar toch vooral weer bezig zullen zijn met virtuele zelfbevredigingen in die blog-postjes van ze. Het zeveren over de laatste wetstekst van een Europees landje waarvan de vertaling van het Pools naar het Engels, via Frans weer terug naar Pools, ineens het tegenovergestelde bewerksteligd of zo.

Dit gezegd hebbende, moest ik maar weer eens wat vaker gaan bloggen. Eens kijken of ik dat overleef.

Aan die bloggers of reaguurders die oncontroleerbaar boos zijn geworden na het lezen van bovenstaande: Koel je woede op je eigen blog, niet door het spammen van deze site. Dat laatste zou namelijk precies bewijzen dat het om ego gaat. Bovendien hebben wij ook wel wat beters te doen dan doodsbedreigingen te modereren.

I have reported on the new TWiki project, named Foswiki, before. Yesterday, the floss project Foswiki received a threat-a-gram from the TWiki.NET COO Will Thomas. In a desperate attempt to save their sinking ship, they think it is acceptable to put limits on free speech.

What they ask is “to stop the confusingly similar use of the TWIKI TM in vague statements”. I find that an odd request, as the term ‘vague’ is highly subjective. If we (the Foswiki project) were to bow to their threats, where will it end? Do we have to remove the T-word completely from the Foswiki site? That sounds close to censorship to me, and (IANAL but) I am sure that is not how trademark law (even in the US) was meant.

A trademark can be used to protect your brand from other entrepreneurs setting up a brand identical or similar to yours. It can not and should not be abused to limit free speech. We have seen a lot of that in recent years, and people like EFF have been fighting such practices by huge corporations for aeons.

The Foswiki project should be able to, and will, mention TWiki is the project from which it forked. If we start redacting history, where will it end? Personally, I think that with this message, we see TWiki.NET for its worth: a venture capital corporation with anonymous investors that stop nowhere to trample over the competition.

I think they are underestimating the force of the closely-knit group of volunteers that are determined to make Foswiki a success, despite legal threats and intimidations. In fact, this is just a mere distraction. We know the T-word is trademarked. In fact, on the Foswiki site there is ample mention of the trademark when the T-word is used.

Well, TWiki.NET. Bring it on. I mentioned the T-word in this blog post a couple of times. Am I next? Will you threaten me or my business with law-suits for using the TWIKI TM “in vague statements”? I fear you not!

I am absolutely thrilled. It has been some time since i reported on the situation with TWiki and the fork. That does not mean there is nothing to report, though! With the first release (1.0.0), Foswiki establishes itself firmly in the marketspace. TWiki is dead, long live Foswiki!

So for those who have not kept up to date, let me summarize the preceding events. It all started 10 years ago, when Peter Thoeny decided to create a fork of JosWiki, and named it TWiki. TWiki developed into a very powerful structured wiki platform, mainly with the help of many volunteers. Lately, Thoeny stopped development contributions, and focussed mainly on pr. Around a year ago, he decided to found a company called TWiki.NET, a venture capital in the silicon valley.

The company promptly decided to take over the entire open source project, claiming it as theirs even though Thoeny’s code contributions to the actual product had been minimal for years at that point. Additional trademark enforcement rules didn’t improve things. After months of strife, the project halted. Thoeny declared himself ‘benevolent dictator for life’, but did not show any benevolence in his dealings with the volunteer community. The culmination came in october 2008, with the lock-out of all current community members from the community site by TWiki.NET. This sparked the fork, first under the working-name Nextwiki and later under the permanent name Foswiki. The Foswiki website contains some background reading.

Rollercoaster ride

The fork took us community members on a rollercoaster-ride. We had to duplicate the project infrastructure that was built up over years on twiki.org, which we managed to do in just one or two weeks. Within moments, a new skin for the TWiki software was designed and implemented, and over the last few months we have had many emails supporting us in our actions. Developers that had been inactive for years because of the dictatorial regime Thoeny imposed on the project suddenly became interested again, new developers decided to join sparked by the radical change of direction.

Seeing the number of developers, designers, user-intraction experts and other contributors that went with the fork, it is reasonable to state that Foswiki is in fact the TWiki project, just under a new name. What is left under twiki.org, the original project website, is mostly a front for the struggling company TWiki.NET. Even though Thoeny keeps boasting the number of people that agreed to the new policy for using twiki.org, the number of actual contributions is very low, and mostly limited to contributions by Thoeny himself and one of his employees.

Meanwhile, in the short period since the fork (about 2.5 months) Foswiki has seen a staggering number of 1900 checkins, a lot of new content on the Foswiki community site, a lot of passionate discussions on the mailing lists and irc channels, and generally the feeling that we are rolling again! The crown on this work for me personally has been when earlier this week I mothballed the TWiki installation on foswiki.org, and replaced that with the Foswiki release candidate, including a port of the new skin-design to Foswiki pattern skin. An important milestone indeed.

New features, security audit and painless migration

That is all very well, and it is easy to gloat in the aftermath of the destruction that Thoeny wrought on the TWiki project. Of course it is not all roses and moonlight (a Dutch expression I believe), Thoeny’s actions have left the user-community in a split: should we stay with what is renamed to Foswiki, or should we go with the new TWiki. Of course, only in retrospect will we be able to determine what the right course of action would have been. However, given the above considerations, it is likely that users interested in innovation are wise to go with Foswiki.

Foswiki is based on an innovative new base architecture for example; as a result Foswiki can be run under FastCGI, a great step forward. Additionally, performance under mod_perl is improved. The same architecture (called FSA, short for Foswiki Stand Alone) makes it possible to run Foswiki as a stand-alone server, without the need of a webserver such as Apache. This is great for setting up a personal Foswiki on your laptop for example, or for using Foswiki in a more CMS-like fashion with agressive caching between the user and the FSA instance.

Other notable features are an improved search dialogue, giving the user much more flexibility and google-like boolean search operators. The venerable pattern-skin has been given a facelift, and is easier to customize.

And last but not least: much attention has been given to the security of the software. A lot of vectors for remote code injection have been identified and plugged, and other features have been made ‘secure by default’, eliminating the risk that a Foswiki application programmer might accidently introduce XSS issues. A further hundred-plus number of bugs have been fixed.

The Foswiki community considers concerns of current TWiki users very seriously. Migration is fairly painless, with the availability of a TWikiCompatibilityPlugin. A “pure” foswiki does not contain any TWiki-isms (such as the TWikiPreferences page) and all plugin functions are placed under the Foswiki namespace instead of the TWiki namespace. This would provide troublesome with legacy TWiki applications and plugins. The compatibility plugin makes those twiki-isms available under Foswiki, enabling old content and plugins to be used without a hitch.

The future

This is where i gather my crystal ball, and gaze at fuzy pictures of what is to come. Given that TWiki is now basically a two-man show, i think they will have a hard time supporting existing users. Both in development, where only one developer struggles to keep up with fixing reported bugs, as in end-user support. Thoeny is trying to single-handedly support the entire user base. Contrary to that situation, Foswiki has a thriving community behind it.

In an earlier post, i voiced the suspicion that TWiki.NET might become more like MySQL: a community of hired developers, with a product that is developed mostly as a commercial application and a floss version that is lagging behind in features as an afterthought. However, TWiki.NET will need money to build that hired community, and so far it does not seem they have the capital to follow through on that thought. Their ideal is the ubuntu model, their only problem is that they do not have the multi-millionaire to invest in endeavours that bring no profit.

I am biased, but I am convinced that Foswiki will prevail and TWiki will slowly die out. And without the vibrant community that made the product, the company that forced a resolution of the persisting stalemate that had locked up the community for years, will turn out to be an empty shell.

TWiki is dead, long live Foswiki!
