On hackerspaces, Fox-IT and OHM2013

Saturday, March 30th, 2013

A recent blogpost by PUSCII lamented the lack of moral fiber in Dutch hackerspaces. While well written, I do think their statements are not fair to all the people currently spending their free time to make the Dutch hackerspace community a vibrant and thriving part of society at large. The resulting mass-hysteria on twitter among German hackers gave me an uncomfortable feeling. My thoughts were torn between ‘if intolerance is leading, fuck the hackerscene’ and ‘there are some very good points being raised here’.

Disclaimer

This blogpost attempts to capture some of my more prevalent thoughts. Note that this blogpost reflects my own personal opinions and obversations, and not those of the OHM2013 organisation as a whole, Fox-IT, any of the hackerspaces I mention in this post nor any other organisation, collective, club or assembly I am part of.

Hackerspaces

There is a theme in PUSCII’s blogpost that reverberates with my own thoughts. Hackerspaces come in many forms. I have visited maybe a hundred of hackerspaces in the past years in a handful of countries, and all are different. In fact, the definition of what constitutes a hackerspace is one that leads to a lot of email threads on the hackerspaces list, many blogposts with varied opinions on the subject, extensive IRC chats. No agreement has been reached.

Within The Netherlands, hackerspaces are a relatively new phenomena. Whereas ASCII and PUSCII may be seen as the earliest hackerspaces in our country, they have always had a more revolutionary perspective on the world. Much like many of the German hackerspaces, they are instruments of the revolution. Many hackerspaces in Germany, really CCC club houses, see it as their mission to provide the infrastructure to help in the greater cause. They have, for example, set up media labs to edit videos that educate the public. They organise ideological discussion meetings.

The current hackerspace movement in The Netherlands is a young one. Sparked by HAR2009, regional groups started to form new initiatives. Initially, these Dutch hackerspaces (when looking at the surface) were mostly places ‘playing with LEDs’. Yet, among those who set up and visit those hackerspaces are many who have the vision that hackerspaces (and in fact, hacker-community) are more than just playgrounds for technophiles.

When I started Revelation Space in The Hague, I had a vision of a hackerspace that would be more like the German CCC club houses. Places where people with a critical view of the world and an inquisitive take on developments surrounding technology, the state and the people gather to engage in (hack)tivism and generally make the world a better place. My ambitions were high, and initially Revelation Space was more of a place where people would just play with LED’s.

Recently though, as the space has matured, I see that activities such as I had envisioned originally, are becoming a part of the daily praxis at Revelation Space. For example, a number of members decided to set up a hotline for hackers, to anonymously report security incidents. They fill in a gap, in a bottom-up way, where our government is failing. The law still puts well-meaning and ethical hackers in a tough spot that discourages reporting issues with security of systems containing privacy sensitive information.

Not only are individual hackerspaces constantly evolving, the hackerspace movement as a whole is changing. More and more hackerspaces open their doors in The Netherlands. Among them are also those of a more reactionary nature, where the focus inherently is more on activism than on tinkering (but never exclusively either one of them). As the hackerspace culture in The Netherlands matures, we will likely see a better balance between pure techno-love and tinkering on the one hand and hard-core hacktivism on the other hand.

OHM2013

I feel sorry that there are people who have expressed they will no longer help out at OHM2013 or no longer visit OHM2013 because of a single sponsor. I don’t feel sorry for OHM2013: it will happen with or without them. And it will be awesome. There will be blinking leds, but there will also be many interesting people. Activists, idealists, pragmatists, all on one field. The sheer potential of useful encounters and discussions that move our thoughts beyond what we can get from experience in isolation alone is awe-inspiring.

Contrary to the German CCC, The Netherlands does not have a structure that allows hackers to organise and meet on a regular basis. The hackerspaces have a role in this, but by nature can not attract the thousands that flock together to the four-yearly hacker camps. And that underlines the importance of the events in the series of OHM2013. They have an important role within the Dutch hacker community.

And of course, there are always people who disagree with the choices made by the group of volunteers putting these conferences together. In 2005, a group of revolutionaries was of the opinion that a community event must be free for all, not something one would have to pay for. Sidestepping the morbid reality of having to pay for equipment to set up an in-promptu network for 3000 hackers, having to pay for tents to house 3000 hackers and those who speak to them, having to pay for showers and toilets to keep 3000 hackers from drowning in their own shit and puke, they set up ‘squat the hack’ and decided that contrary to all the other visitors they did not have to pay for that edition of the camp.

Even in 1989, the Galactic Hacker Party was accused by some more extermist squatters in Amsterdam of being a platform for ‘those evil corporate computer people with their capitalistic computer machines’ (mind you, computers were still something of an oddity back then).

In 2009, some people accused the HAR2009 organisation of being corporate sell-outs who only were in it for the money. Despite the fact that I personally, as one of the driving forces behind that edition, nearly went bankrupt because I chose to work on HAR2009 instead of doing paid work.

And now we have a group of people condemning the entire event based on rumours about a single sponsor. So be it. One cannot please everyone at the same time, yet having this conference is paramount to the further maturing of the Dutch hackerscene. Not only that, it gives the newer generations of hackers a chance to meet the older generations. And to meet the many passionate individuals who fight for their causes and ideals.

So, all in all, if you do decide not to come to OHM2013 because your leaders tell you it is considered bad form to do so, then that is your loss. You will miss out on a unique opportunity to educate others on your ideals and to be exposed to radical new ideas that may broaden your mind.

Fox-IT

About a year ago I was contacted by Walter from Fox-IT. He saw my skills and my ideals and thought they would make a good match with those of Fox-IT. At first I was skeptical, but after the first few talks my opinion turned around.

Some now believe I have become a slave of the dark side. That is ok, for I know it is not the case. Working on ‘the inside’, I can see that among those people making up Fox-IT are also the same idealists that I am. There has always been a lot of debate about, for example, Replay (the so-called ‘wire-tapping’ software which is basically a pimped sort of wireshark without the capturing abilities). Not because of the software, but of the possible business decisions made at the time.

I would invite all the critics, those who click ‘retweet’ on tweets full of allegations, to come to OHM2013 and meet Fox-IT. Talk to the people who work there. You will find out they are not all that different from yourself.

As an example, recently someone brought up the subject of a ‘police trojan’ on the internal nerds mailing list. He had heard something about it, and thought Fox-IT could develop such a tool to aid in catching cyber-criminals. It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside to see the outspoken ‘NO we can not develop such software’ present in all the replies to that thread. My colleagues, like me, are intrinsically against such practices for all the same reasons that the criticasters are.

Heck, talking to Ronald Prins (CEO of the company, and for some the personification of evil on this world) you might even find out his opinions are much more balanced than the impression you might get when you let the media filter his statements for you. Note that I do not feel inclined to defend his opinions here or anywhere, as I myself sometimes vehemently disagree.

I have seen that the consciousness of Fox-IT is a very active and vocal one, and is formed by the moral fiber (to use an overloaded term) of those who work there. Even before the fefe-isation of this discussion, my colleagues expressed doubts and worries about Replay (sold in 2011 and no longer a product of Fox-IT). When the German community went into a dogmatic stance against OHM2013 because of the sponsorship, the discussion within Fox-IT naturally increased as well. I have spent many hours the last few days at my desk, in the hallways and the canteen. I am impressed by the insightful and intelligent remarks and questions.

Yes, Fox-IT develops tools that help the police catch bad guys. If you are radically against any form of authority, that might rub against your fur. I am not a big fan of the police and their more violent nature myself, having spent a fair amount inside police cells. I have walked in demonstrations where the police clubbed down demonstrators without provocation. But I have also been glad the police was around when a pretty fucked-up individual was about to attack me. Those two police officers might very well have prevented that I ended up bleeding to death on platform 12 of Amsterdam Central station.

So there are two sides to every story. And while some of you may think Fox-IT is engaged in activities that don’t jive with your morality, I believe (from observation and discussion) that this is not the case. Ronald Prins has a vocal opinion, but in expressing it he may not always act in accordance with the larger group of people that make up Fox-IT. Personally, when I disagree with his statements I will tell him (and in fact, he consults me and many others within Fox-IT on a regular basis). I do not see Fox-IT engage in activities that I am vehemently opposing: “state-sponsored malware”, making products to listen in on phone calls or internet traffic, prosecute hackers who are on the good side or otherwise participate in far-reaching violations of basic civil rights. If I would see such activities, I would have terminated my employment without further thought.

Conclusion

I am not one to make decisions based on popular opinion. That makes me a loner. I choose to work for Fox-IT, a company perceived by many of my peers to be at the wrong side of the sharp line dividing good and evil. It has led to intolerant and outward hostile reactions from some of them. Still, I am at peace with that decision. Even though people may not understand, I am where I need to be: in peace with myself, my decisions and my ideals. I wish everyone the same.

HAR2009, the sequel

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

So while everyone is eagerly awaiting news about the ccc camp in August of this year, my mind is already wandering to August 2013. Of course, I am looking forward to the camp and Hx2. And I am somewhat implicated in the organisation of Hx2 (mainly writing texts and handling the financial issues). But I am sort of saving my powers for the sequel to HAR2009, ???2013!

There is no name yet, there is no location yet. Heck, there is no organisation yet. But I know there will be a next edition, and I know Hxx will be behind it.

As with HAR2009, I am already stirring up the fire. Just a little. I mean, seriously, doing such a thing as HAR2009 is an enormous task to take on, and starting just one year before the actual event has proven to be effective yet kinda stressful. Anyway, I am not yet hashing out details such as where the next edition will be or what the name will be. We can sort that out later, can’t we? No, I am still contemplating the bigger picture: what will be the timeframe, who will pull the cart.

With HAR2009 I got help from Fenrir early on. I am very glad Mischa got him on board, as he has proven to be instrumental in getting the job done. I have learned a lot from this seasoned hacker-event veteran. For that matter, things would never have happened had Mischa not been there. Sadly, as things are now, they will not be in a position to take a half-year break from work to concentrate on the event this time. So that leaves me.

Of course, they will be there in their roles as board members of the foundation, but the day-to-day stuff will be down to me. Yet, it is a lot for one person to take on. Experience shows that you need two people full-time during crunch-time. So now a daunting task has been imparted on me: find someone that gets along with me, has a healthy dose of intelligence, a bunch of social skills, is a doer and available full-time for the first half year of 2013. That narrows it down quite a lot.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. Sure, let us first enjoy the ccc camp, which is going to be a blast if the signs are any indication. I mean, shit, a hacker space program? But not long after that, the hunt for a location is on! And then, mid-2012 when we have found the most awesome location, we can get down to the details.

I am already looking forward to have the honour of working with such an amazing group of volunteers again. Both the recidivists as well as the greenhorns. You all inspire me to do what I do. Thanks in advance, guys & gals. I love you all!

Stop ACTA: write to the EP

Friday, May 14th, 2010

ACTA, if you are even slightly interested in your rights on-line you will have heard about it. The document, although it encompasses more than just your on-line life, is meant to combat piracy: the free flow of copyrighted material made possible by the internet. Recently, the proposed text has been released. There are severe implications for your life on-line, if this agreement is accepted by the negotiation partners (the European Union, the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and a couple of other countries), things like filtering of internet traffic and even permanent disconnection from the internet are possible facts of reality that you will have to contend with. It is therefore time to act, and write to the members of the European parliament to convince them to vote against the dangerous parts of this proposed agreement.

Now I admit, reading through the almost 40 pages of legalese is not for everyone. Luckily, the EFF (the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a long-standing fighter for your rights online) has written an excellent summary on the document. I recommend reading that if you don’t want to read the actual document itself. There is also a nice Dutch summary written by BOF (Bits of Freedom, sort of the national counterpart of the EFF). Both list four reasons why ACTA is dangerous:

  • Intermediate parties, the internet providers, will be made to enforce the agreement by filtering internet traffic relating to file-sharing;
  • Disconnection from the internet in case of alleged infringement of copyright, you as an internet user can be disconnected by your ISP if there is an accusation of infringement, no trial, no judge, just gone from the net;
  • Criminalization of non-commercial use, severe penalties for mere citizens such as you and I that up until now were reserved for criminals who are willfully and for profit mass-producing illegal copies of, for example, movie DVD’s;
  • Seizing of computers and other equipment in the case of alleged copyright infringement, in other words: the police can come and take your computer (and destroy it) if you use file-sharing technology, irrespective of whether you are sharing copyrighted material or not.

Several organisations so far have jumped on the ‘Stop ACTA’ bandwagon, and a simple search on ‘stop ACTA’ on a search engine of your choice will get you a whole lot of sites that are somehow trying to counter this agreement. You can sign several petitions, and you should. But in the end, a petition is just a single number, and does not impress the average member of the European parliament that much. What impresses them most: personal letters, emails or even phone calls, where citizens of their constitucy explain why they believe ACTA is not a Good Thing.

So I hereby call everyone to arms: write your members of parliament! Tell them, in your own words, why you think ACTA should not become law in Europe. The site of the European parliament can give you a list of the members that represent your country, and their contact details. Of course, you can write to all members of the EP. But, in general, members of the parliament represent the people from their own country and are therefore more likely to listen to input from their country. On the other hand, you do not have to restrict yourself to those members of parliament that are aligned with your own political preferences.

Try to make your letter personal! Don’t just copy and paste one of the many example texts that are all over the web. Rather, use them as inspiration. A thousand different emails make a bigger impression than ten-thousand copies of the same letter. You do not have to write high-quality prose ready for publiction in the papers, so even if you think yourself a bad writer I am sure you can come up with a sentence or two saying you do not want ACTA in your life.

Some members of parliament will respond to your letter, perhaps explaining why they think ACTA is a good thing, or why they agree with you that it is not. Some might not even reply, and yet in other cases you will hear from an assistant to the member of parliament. Don’t be discouraged by that. Voicing your opinion is important, and even if you do not get to speak to the member of parliament in person, your input will be passed on and considered when time comes to vote.

Act now! Stop ACTA! Write to your members of parliament!

TWiki.NET threatens TWiki spin-off Foswiki

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

I have reported on the new TWiki project, named Foswiki, before. Yesterday, the floss project Foswiki received a threat-a-gram from the TWiki.NET COO Will Thomas. In a desperate attempt to save their sinking ship, they think it is acceptable to put limits on free speech.

What they ask is “to stop the confusingly similar use of the TWIKI TM in vague statements”. I find that an odd request, as the term ‘vague’ is highly subjective. If we (the Foswiki project) were to bow to their threats, where will it end? Do we have to remove the T-word completely from the Foswiki site? That sounds close to censorship to me, and (IANAL but) I am sure that is not how trademark law (even in the US) was meant.

A trademark can be used to protect your brand from other entrepreneurs setting up a brand identical or similar to yours. It can not and should not be abused to limit free speech. We have seen a lot of that in recent years, and people like EFF have been fighting such practices by huge corporations for aeons.

The Foswiki project should be able to, and will, mention TWiki is the project from which it forked. If we start redacting history, where will it end? Personally, I think that with this message, we see TWiki.NET for its worth: a venture capital corporation with anonymous investors that stop nowhere to trample over the competition.

I think they are underestimating the force of the closely-knit group of volunteers that are determined to make Foswiki a success, despite legal threats and intimidations. In fact, this is just a mere distraction. We know the T-word is trademarked. In fact, on the Foswiki site there is ample mention of the trademark when the T-word is used.

Well, TWiki.NET. Bring it on. I mentioned the T-word in this blog post a couple of times. Am I next? Will you threaten me or my business with law-suits for using the TWIKI TM “in vague statements”? I fear you not!

Here is the threat-o-gram (copied from the mailing list archive):

Hacking at Random

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Well, it’s been a hectic day, as we just went live with the announcement below:

Hacking at Random

International technology & security conference. Four days of technology, ideological debates and hands-on tinkering. On August 13-16, 2009 the 20th anniversary edition of the four-yearly Dutch outdoor technology-conference will take place near Vierhouten, NL.

What is HAR?

Since 1989 the international community that builds the internet has been getting together on a series of conferences to discuss the state of contemporary technology, the future of it and the sociological and political consequences of their work. The participants vary from students and people with personal interests to researchers, scientists and entrepreneurs who are widely recognized as the best in their field. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the average level of knowledge is high and outside of the official lectures the site is buzzing with energy, ideas and projects. The New York Times likened the 1997 edition to a “Woodstock for Hackers”. We do our best to keep that atmosphere. When these conferences first happened twenty years ago, the internet was like the Wild West, a new frontier to explore. That has changed, virtually every household in the Western world has access to the internet and, just as happened in the Wild West, new questions have risen. Questions of governance, sustainability, integration with existing power structures, shortage of IP space and energy, censorship, security, etc. The notion of hacking, to use a system in a creative way that was not thought of when it was invented, has also shown to be applicable to fields outside of ICT technology.

Where is HAR?

The location (+52° 19′ 50.02″, +5° 49′ 27.98″) is near Vierhouten, a small settlement in the beautiful Veluwe area renowned for its culinary industry. The former socialist youth-camp de Paasheuvel provides some good old-fashioned Dutch gezelligheid. A variety of camping areas will cater to our broad range of camping and non-camping audience: varying from secluded spots in the foliage to larger fields for those of you who want to cluster together to form a village. There is a train-station nearby, in Nunspeet. From there it is a 10-minute drive to the festival terrain. Some form of transport from the station to the terrain will be arranged, but the truly adventurous among you may choose to take a hike: it is definetely within walking distance and the surroundings will not disappoint.

Who is HAR?

You, me and some hundreds (if not thousands) of other like-minded folks. In true spirit, there will be no visitors but only volunteers. In order to keep costs low, expect to lend a hand here and there. You might be operating the A/V-equipment in one of the lecture tents, sweep the floor in the bar tent, check in visitors at the entrance or pour drinks at the bar. A great way to discover new talents, or develop those hidden ones you never suspected you had! Of course, there is a somewhat smaller group of madmen and women that will lay (and have been laying) the groundwork for another great edition in the year leading up to the event. This event could easily be dubbed ‘the next generation’. Because, yes, the original crew that has been working hard on these conferences have earned a relaxing holiday by organising the four preceeding events. A new generation is eager to take over, and continue their legacy. Not to say that the old farts are not interested, au contraire my friends. There is a healthy mix of new blood and experienced hands currently working on the necesarry preparations. In fact, this is reflected nicely in the foundation that was set up to handle all the paperwork and other legal requirements: the Hxx foundation. Its board is a 50/50 mix of old and new: Aldert Hazenberg and Mischa Peters have been involved to a great extent in all past events, Koen Martens made his organising debut 3 years ago on WTH and Mathijs Schmittmann is our new kid on the block. In case you are wondering “but where is Rop Gonggrijp”, no fears: he is right around the corner and believes we “pesky new-generation event-hackers” are going to do just fine. He will help out where possible, but more on that below. Of course, HAR will not be happen without huge sums of money. We have tried to keep ticket prices low, even in these times of financial crisis, so we are attracting a number of sponsors and donors. But don’t worry, HAR will not be called ‘Yoyodyne Inc. HAR2009’ even if Yoyodyne coughs up millions of euro’s.

And more..

As this is being written, the last work is undertaken on the ticket-webshop, which we hope to have online early december. At the same time, the program committee, led by the more than qualified Rop Gonggrijp, is preparing the call for papers and otherwise developing a solid lecture program that’ll make your mouth water (even if you have visited every single conference between WTH and now and seen em all). Of course, planning has started on an in-promptu power infrastructure and intranet, with uplink to the interwebs. And naturally, there will be various foods and beverages.
